Abstract
The present study aimed to examine the interaction effects of providing and receiving in spousal care on depressive symptoms.
The analytic sample included 1,550 men and 1,630 women in couple households aged 65 or above from the 2017 Survey of Living Conditions and Welfare Needs Korean Older Persons. The interaction effects were analyzed by using PROCESS in SPSS 25.0. The respondents¡¯ age, education level, household income, subjective health status, chronic diseases, subjective health status of spouse, and relationship satisfaction with spouse and child were controlled for in the analysis. The interaction effects of spousal care providing and receiving on depressive symptoms were significant among elderly men. For men who received spousal care above the mean level, providing spousal care was significantly and negatively associated with their depressive symptoms. However, for those men who received low levels of spousal care, providing spousal care was not significantly associated with their depressive symptoms. For women, providing spousal care was negatively associated with their depressive symptoms but the interaction effects between providing and receiving spousal care were not significant for their depressive symptoms. Findings from this study provide significant insights into future research in examining spousal care as dyadic processes rather than one-sided processes.
